Research Sources Essay Example for Free

Research Sources Essay In reference to our text book, primary sources of secondary research include audio, video, or written transcripts of original research speeches in entirety, and raw data that has not been interpreted. Primary sources serve as the best sources as they have not been diluted with thoughts or interpretations of another source. Laws, court documents, census, human resource records, are primary sources. Primary sources are most trustworthy and valuable sources of data. Secondary sources are the interpretation of the primary sources listed above. Secondary sources come in the form of newspaper articles, textbooks, and the news reports that we are able to watch daily. Secondary sources are filtered primary sources and the second most valuable source of information. Examples of tertiary sources are represented by what we use today on the internet such as Google and Bing. Tertiary sources of secondary research are the least valuable resource. The problems of secondary data quality that researchers must face concern the data’s integrity. The effective researcher would want to evaluate their information sources such as the internet. The important aspects of such an evaluation are; the source’s purpose, the researcher wants to uncover its agenda and whether or not the purpose is affected by biases; the scope, in which the researcher determines the inclusion of details such as the depth of the criteria, how updated it is and whether or not the information provided is biased; authority, which lets the researcher know the level of data and credentials of the source or author; the audience, which explains the background of those whom the information is intended for; and the format, which explains how the information is arranged, and whether or not it was presented in a helpful and easy to locate design for the researcher to obtain. Qualitative research differs from quantitative research in that quantitative research dealt with the precise measurements of the subject, whereas qualitative research goes deeper into exp laining or focusing on the why and how situations happen the way they do. Some examples of the qualitative research include focus groups, individual interviews, and observations. Qualitative research focuses on the feelings, emotions, perceptions, and motivations of situations. Quantitative research on the other hand measures opinions, behaviors, and knowledge. In this week’s reading, it was confirmed that some managers prefer quantitative data, because it is less likely subjected to human biases and errors. Quantitative research is used greatly for testing theories, while qualitative research is used primarily for the development of new products, managing benefits, and performance management functions such as boosting productivity. The book describes qualitative research as being based on the aspect of phenomenon in a situation, versus the quantitative or mathematical aspect. Data from qualitative research differs from data from quantitative research, because quantitative data is solely rooted in the aspect of probability; and qualitative data deals with the methodologies, which incite better and deeper understanding. Qualitative data explains how and why things are happening, and does not sample the probable. Qualitative data comes from sources such as anthropology, psychology, sociology, communications, economics, linguistics, and semiotics. Qualitative data comes from focus groups and sometimes interviews. The Gallup workplace survey is considered qualitative researched data. In my o rganization, we have to develop focus groups to develop ways to give our organization superior scores, so we have to develop ways to make the employees â€Å"feel good† about where they work. The survey asks questions that have to do with the way people feel. Like, someone encourages their development at work, they have a best friend at work, and if they trust their employer. Being a manufacturer of small kitchen electronics such as Hamilton Beach or Proctor Silex, and I want to determine if some innovative designs with unusual shapes and colors developed for the European market would work for the U.S. market, the qualitative research I would most likely recommend is sampling. More specifically, I would choose purposive and convenience sampling. This way, we would have access to new and willing consumers, with a fresh mind to the organizations creative new products. Interviewing individual people or focus groups do not seem promising when there is the introduction of a new product to consider, because many people are less likely to express their creativity in using unconventional products with others. However if offered the ability to sample a new product, people are more likely to try it before they buy it, most people can be talked out of buying a new product

Creating a Lego Mindstorm Navigation Robot :: Robotics

Includes Source Code Lego Navigation System Abstract My project was to create a robot out of a Lego Mindstorms construction set that was capable of â€Å"knowing† where it was. The robot would head out on a random path, remember and update its location, and return to its origin on a straight line. The challenge of this project was not so much a matter of constructing the robot, but of creating a working program in the week and a half time limit. The project goal was met on the last day, thus showing that a Lego navigation system is possible. Background A war zone is a dangerous place, especially for the infantry. Any advantage, technological or otherwise is welcome, and any technology that spares soldiers’ lives is invaluable. Recently, one such technology has made its way to the battlefield; remote controlled robots. These robots can take real-time video, maneuver inside and out, and move hazardous materials out of the way of troops. Two of the leading manufacturer’s of these robots are iRobot and the US Marine Corps. IRobots’ PackBot EOD uses a camera/grabber, multiple sensors, and a unique tread system capable of climbing stairs in order to execute the majority of its tasks. It also has GPS. The US Marine Corps’ Dragon Runner is a rugged, four-wheeled machine with a camera and other sensors safely encased in the body. The Dragon Runner weighs roughly 16 pounds, while the PackBot is just over twice that much weight. While these robots are a great help in a war zone, the navigation system could be improved. If the robot could navigate by itself, the soldiers that previously had to operate the robot would be free to do more important tasks. By implementing a Cartesian coordinate system, I believe that these robots be programmed with a simple self-navigation system. Procedure The physical design of NavBot is very simple. It follows the basic design of TankBot, as described in David Baum’s Definitive Guide to Lego Mindstorms. I chose this design as the basis of my robot due to its simplicity and ease of construction. While it follows the basic TankBot design, it has its variations, because I didn’t want to hunt down all of the â€Å"required† pieces. When I first built the body and tested it, I found that the robot tended to drift to the right. This was easily fixed by changing the power level of the left motor from 7 (highest) to 4. Aside from a few decorations (wings, camel head, smiley face), the physical aspect of NavBot was complete. The more important, as well as complicated, problem was how to program

The True Eternal Love Is the Love of a Mother to Her Child

As of now I have not yet experienced to carry a child to my womb. But you know what? I already felt it. It’s really hard to be pregnant in times of troubles and problems. My sister experienced it. On that time, she had to move away from us because my mom didn’t want to see her. It’s emotionally hurting. I know how she feels, how they feels. Mom is hurting too. But I knew her. She will never show her weaknesses to others. On the other side, Ate is hurting. She is emotional because she is pregnant. That’s why I just supported her.I tried to make her smile every day I’m going to their home. Yes, I’m visiting them without mom knowing it. I’m bringing her a piece of mango every day, or sometimes oranges, or an apple. I want her to be healthy for the sake of the baby, too. It’s really happy to think that in that way, we became closer and closer to each other. Almost all the time her husband was on his work. That’s why I’ m the one coming with her at the maternal clinic every schedule. I felt excitement when I saw the baby’s first picture! The doctor told us there that it was a girl. She’s pretty. I knew it! =)She’s seven months on her mother’s womb when Ate took steps on the stage to get her diploma. Yes, she did continue studying to finish her course. It’s not our mom who walked with her but our aunt. Thanks to our lovable auntie because she helped us to convince mom to let Ate live with us again. I know she can’t ignore it. Why? Because she do loves us, Very much indeed. Dramatic scenario when the entire member of the family cried. That was a happy night to remember, when our family from being broken unite as one again. And that, there is one little angel will be added to the family. It was June then. The baby grew bigger at Ate’s womb. The doctor told her to stop eating too much. The baby is too big and might get bigger if she continues to do so. If that happened, it will be hard for her to give birth. June 15 was actually her due date but until the 25th of June came, she’s not feeling anything that indicates she had to confine. I suggested then to take her to hospital so that the doctors could give her drugs. The baby was excited to feel us. I felt it too. She’s moving almost all the time. And it is ridiculous that whenever I’m asking her to move, she will definitely do t! She can understand and hear me. It’s blissful! The day came. It was 30th of June and I was on my school. I called my mom by lunch time and she told me Ate was still laboring. I was so worried. I know it’s difficult for her. If you could only see Ate, she is thin and little! And imagine that big angel on her tummy! The only thing I can do is praying. Surprisingly by 3:40, I was on my home from school, my mom texted me that Ate had successfully gave birth to her baby. And about her name? She was named Criziah Wynes M. Agao. |Pretty cool, isn’t it?The next day they came home. Ate was sick and tired. I bet she got to confine. It might be a serious illness like the doctor told them before they leave. She can’t even take care of Wynes. That’s why I’m helping my mom to fix things needed for our angel. And as time goes by, by God’s will, we became okay and the family became big and happy. Now Wynes is one! And until now, I am one of her so called moms. She’s always calling me. She wants to come with me whenever i’m going to school. She wants me to be with her whenever they’re going somewhere.I almost live at their house because she wants me to sing a lullaby for her at her sleeping time. But ask me about the feeling. It’s very happy to be with her EVERY MOMENT. I’m not her mom, but I can feel she is mine. She is my pain reliever, stress reliever and my happiness. She makes me smile though I’m not well. She makes me smile thru bad ti mes. I’m not a mom. But Wynes let me experience and feel it. I also don’t believe in eternal love, I never before. But as of now, I just realize that aside from God’s eternal love for us, there is another one. And it is the love of a mother to her child. =)

What Marine Animal Holds Its Breath the Longest

Some animals, like fish, crabs and lobsters, can breathe underwater. Other animals, like whales, seals, sea otters, and turtles, live all or part of their lives in the water, but cant breathe underwater.  Despite their inability to breathe underwater, these animals have an amazing ability to hold their breath for a long time. But what animal can hold its breath the longest? The Animal That Holds Its Breath the Longest So far, that record goes to the Cuviers beaked whale, a medium-sized whale that is known for its long, deep dives. Theres a lot that is unknown about the oceans, but with developments in research technologies, were learning more each day. One of the most useful developments in recent years has been the use of tags to track an animals movements. It was through using a satellite tag that researchers Schorr, et.al. (2014) discovered this beaked whales amazing breath-holding capabilities. Of the coast of California, eight Cuviers beaked whales were tagged. During the study, the longest dive recorded was 138 minutes. This was also the deepest dive recorded—the whale dove more than 9,800 feet. Until this study, southern elephant seals were thought to be the big winners in the breath-holding Olympics. Female elephant seals have been recorded holding their breath for 2 hours and diving more than 4,000 feet. How Do They Hold Their Breath so Long? Animals that hold their breath underwater still need to use oxygen during that time.  So how do they do it?  The key seems to be myoglobin, an oxygen-binding protein, in the muscles of these marine mammals. Because these myoglobins have a positive charge, the mammals can have more of them in their muscles, as the proteins repel each other, rather than sticking together and clogging up the muscles. Deep-diving mammals have ten times more myoglobin in their muscles than we do. This allows them to have more oxygen to use when theyre underwater. Whats Next?   One of the exciting things about ocean research is that we never know what happens next. Perhaps more tagging studies will demonstrate that Cuviers beaked whales can hold their breath even longer—or that there is a mammal species out there that can surpass even them.
